What are Ants?

Ants are insects that have complicated social structures and live together in large groups. All ants have three distinctive body parts: a head, a thorax, and an abdomen. They also have a pair of bent antennae. Only the reproductive members of a colony are winged. There are many species of ants living throughout Pennsylvania. One species that many homeowners deal with is odorous house ants. As their name states, these ants emit a powerful, unpleasant smell when they are crushed. The smell is often likened to that of a rotting coconut. Odorous house ants are brown or black in color, and adults grow to between 1/16” and 1/8” in length.

Are ants dangerous?

Most species of ants are mostly a nuisance and cause no real health problems for people or damage to structures. Odorous house ants are considered nuisance ants. While extremely annoying to deal with, they won’t cause you or your home significant harm. However, eliminating their presence in a timely manner is important because, like all species of ants, they will quickly contaminate food sources.

There are some species of ants that live throughout Pennsylvania and are considered to be dangerous. Dangerous ants are those species that can cause damage to structures or that can spread disease, bite, or sting. The best way to identify the species of ant living in or around your home is to contact an experienced pest professional.

Why do I have an ant problem?

You have an ant problem because your home or yard is providing them with food, water, and shelter. Ants, like most pests, are opportunistic and will take advantage of easy access to the things they need to survive. Ants are attracted to properties with gardens and compost areas, pet food, outdoor eating areas, garbage cans, leaky fixtures, wood or rock piles, dense vegetation, fallen trees, and tree stumps.

Where will I find ants?

Outside, ants can be found nesting in a variety of locations, including under fallen trees, in tree stumps, under mulch, in cracks in pavement or cement, and next to foundations. Odorous house ants prefer to nest outside in areas of exposed soil or underneath woodpiles. Ants often make their way inside while foraging for food. Once inside, it is common for them to stay and create a satellite nest near their newfound food source. Common indoor nesting spots include behind wall voids, underneath floors, and in spaces above ceilings. Odorous house ants are attracted to moisture and choose to make nesting spots that are near hot water pipes, heaters, and leaky fixtures.

Customer Review

We recently had a carpenter bee problem and when I reached out, they were able to make an appointment around my schedule. In one application, the bees are gone and we are using our front porch again! While there, they took the initiative to check the rest of the house for any additional problems. Will definitely use again!

They did a termite treatment for us where we had significant activity and damage. They did the treatment last year for us and haven’t seen anything since then. They also referred us to a carpenter that did the repair work which turned out good. We have since started using their quarterly pest service as well.
